Drone_nvironment is a project that finalize my thesis work Il drone ambientale that
is a research on drone as musical object and its relationship with human through different musical genres and different historical periods.
It is a digital instrument that uses different synthesis techniques to investigate the relationship between drone and soundscape.
It does through the decomposition and the spectral analysis of Ambisonics field recordings of natural and urban soundscapes.
The two fundamental techniques that are involved are granular synthesis accumulation and time stretching that Barry Truax, the composer that inspire me in the project, define as:
“a tool that allows you to observe matter as if under a microscope e
to enter, from a perceptive point of view, another time by focusing
even minimal details of the internal movement of the acoustic material.”
It is built in Max/msp/jitter, a visual programming language from Cycling ‘74 for music and multimedia research.
The instrument is coinceived for both performative and installative environment, starting from 1th order Ambisonics field recordings it produces harmonic and inharmonic drones using 4 granulators and effects and it targets the sounds to a 4 channel quadraphonic diffusion system.
